Karen Nixon of Walton, describes Big Dunc as one of her all-time heroes so was absolutely shocked and overwhelmed to see the man himself on her doorstep.
Duncan, who took time out from preparing for the first-team’s trip to Singapore, decided to visit Karen after hearing she was not only one of the first to buy tickets for his testimonial, but was bringing her whole family along to Goodison Park on Sunday 2 August to watch the Blues take on Villarreal.
Speaking about the surprise, Karen said: “I’m gobsmacked, totally blown away and really did not expect Duncan to be standing at my doorstep. It really is a dream come true.”
Karen has been one of Duncan Ferguson’s biggest fans since he joined Everton in 1994. From having a picture of him celebrating after scoring against Manchester United in 1995 displayed in her work locker to attending Duncan’s wedding ceremony to wish him well, she has followed his career closely and is delighted the Club is hosting his testimonial.
Karen added: “Going to the game was not the same when he left to join Newcastle and I was so happy when he returned as a player and then as a coach. As soon as the tickets came out for the game at 8am I was online and purchased them for the family. We’ll all be in the Lower Gwladys cheering the team on and hopefully see Duncan playing.”
The surprise visit from Duncan came around because Karen was the first to purchase tickets for the testimonial against Villarreal on Sunday 2 August.
On meeting Karen, the Blues hero told evertontv: “This is why we do visits like this, to meet the fans. They are what it’s all about – it’s the fans that make Everton. I see myself as here for them and Karen’s been there in the stands for me, even at my wedding although I bet her husband got a fright when I was at the door!”
Tickets are now on sale for Duncan Ferguson’s testimonial on Sunday 2 August at Goodison Park against Villarreal, kick-off 3pm. Tickets are priced at £20 for adults and £10 for under-16s and over 65s.
